About Amy
Roan Psychology, PLLC · Knoxville
I am a pain psychologist, having worked as a mental health expert on medical and pain management teams for over 15 years at a large medical center. In these roles, I gained firsthand knowledge of exposure to the realities of medical care from inside the healthcare system and what it takes to care for patients with complex medical needs.
I received specialized training and experience in treating chronic pain and
other persistent symptoms with evidence-based approaches, including Pain
Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy
(EAET) for Chronic Pain, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Headaches (CBT-HA). I also have expertise in treating insomnia (with CBT-Insomnia) and trauma.
I operate a private psychology practice focused on chronic pain and other mind-
body/neuroplastic symptoms. I live in Tennessee and provide telehealth sessions in over 40 states.
My passion for treating chronic pain began when working with patients as part of a multidisciplinary pain management team and developing a deep sense of empathy for their struggles. My compassion for those with chronic pain solidified after having my own experience with chronic back pain and other persistent symptoms, which led me to mind-body work. Having success with these approaches in my own life and my patients’ lives further reinforced my passion for and belief in this work. I know the stress of living with pain, not being able to do the things you love to do, attending multiple appointments, seeing specialists, getting conflicting diagnoses and opinions (or no answers), the discouragement of getting nowhere, what a flare-up feels like, and being told you "just have to learn to live with” your pain. I know that your symptoms are real, that there is hope, healing is possible, and there is a way forward.
I can help you learn how to respond differently to your pain or other symptoms, reduce the control your symptoms have over your life, and change patterns that aren’t working so that you can gradually get back to doing the things that matter to you.
Symptoms I commonly help with include back pain (or pain anywhere in the body), fatigue, headaches and migraines, widespread pain such as fibromyalgia, insomnia, and many other neuroplastic conditions and symptoms.
I welcome you to reach out if you feel we may be a good fit.
